Minesto - tidal energy project

SEV cooperates with the Swedish marine energy company Minesto on a two-year tidal energy project in Vestmannasund in the Faroe Islands. Vestmannasund is the sound separating the islands Vágar and Streymoy.

Minesto has developed the Deep Green technology, which produces electricity from slow tidal streams and ocean currents by a unique principle. By sweeping a small turbine across a large area, at a speed several times the actual speed of the underwater current, Minesto's subsea kite enhances the energy conversion compared to other technologies. As a result it is applicable in areas where no other known technology can operate cost effectively.

Peak tidal velocity in the Faroe Islands is 3.5 m/s.

On 1st December 2020, Minesto reached a milestone, when the 100 kW 'Havfrúgvin' kite delivered first tidal energy to the Faroese grid.
