39 percent renewables in first half of 2019

Dry weather and below average wind speed in the first half of 2019 affect Faroese renewable energy production

While 1st half of 2018 saw a 48 percent share of renewable electricy production, this years’ hydro power and wind power production reached a mere 39 per cent of total electrical power production by 30th June 2019.

Precipitation in May 2019 was 57.1 mm compared to 188.5 mm in May of 2018, and average wind speed in May 2019 was 5.9 metres per second compared to 8.2 mps in 2018. Renewable energy sources are unpredictable energy sources and fluctuations will occur in accordance with the weather conditions. Dry weather and below average wind speed will affect the percentage part of renewable electric energy generation.

Thermic power made up 61 percent of total production, whereas hydropower and windpower made up 24 and 15 percent, respectively.

Total electrical power production in the Faroe Islands was at an all time high in the first half of 2019, when it reached 186 GWh, which is an increase of 9.6 precent compared to the same period the previous year.
